Pre-announcement

To be sent on 2/6/2017 to all current Workbench users and the ndslabs Google group update.

(I modded it up a bit to have some specific info
If we could just tar up /var/glfs/global and tar -xp on the new system, we can simplify this greatly and make it sound less concerning

NDS Labs Workbench is scheduled to be off-line for a system upgrade  Friday, February 10th through Tuesday, February 14th.

The NDS Labs Workbench service will be upgraded during this time to enhance stability and improve system performance,

A post-upgrade email will announce the resumption of service, and include any important notes about the upgrade.

Impacts:

  • Workbench accounts will be maintained across the upgrade, access to your account will continue without change.
  • Accounts will effectively be returned to their initial, empty state:
    • Services provisioned in your account and any data related to your provisioned services will be discarded.
    • Files in the account home directory will be discarded.

Actions Required:

  • Typical users of workbench:
    • No action is necessary.  Your account will be accessible as usual but will be in a clean state with no data or services.
  • Users wishing to archive/transfer data and/or files to another system:
    • You must save your data and files before the upgrade window above, after the upgrade your account will be in a clean state and data will not be retrievable.
    • You may use the workbench file-manager and/or linux archiving tools from the command-line to archive your home files and transfer them to your storage.
    • Service-related data (managed by services such as databases) can be exported through the normal export/backup mechanisms in each particular tool.
Service data can be exported to your home directory, then included in a single archive of your home directory along with the export/backup files included.
