My concerns about confusion on the Downloads page:
- Inconsistent linking to client file and repository.
- Not everything on the page is really a "download". Could relabel as "Get Brown Dog" or something.
- No sense of releases/versions. Does the user already have the latest release installed?
Overall I think the page is trying to serve too many purposes/audiences. Developers, end users, etc.. It also presents information without enough explanation for the end user, such as "repository" links that lead to pages that are frankly baffling to someone looking for a download.
Recommendation: Break this into at least 2 pages. One should target the end user and only mention repositories in fine print. Download links should be prominent and have versioned filenames as their text.
End user page (perhaps 2 tabs)
- Downloadable tools
- Brown dog API libraries for various languages (link to repo is fine, but perhaps the rendered README link is better)
Developer page:
- Development Tools (templates first)
- Pecan, Clowder, iRODS
