It looks like the backup process puts a lot of stress on MongoDB. Right now when uploading a file an event gets created asynchronously. The current implementation checks the events collection to see if someone has access to a file. This would explain the non-deterministic nature of the errors. This should just be a matter of changing the write concern = 1.
Once we properly implement the mapping of users from fence to clowder we can change this back.
