A dataset that does not belong to any space (i.e. only accessible to the user who created it) is not listed in view datasets page (e.g. http://localhost:9000/clowder/datasets) while this is not the case for collections. A collection that does not belong to any space is listed in view collections page (http://localhost:9000/clowder/collections). There has to be some sort of uniformity in the feature behaviors. If we don't want to show collections / datasets that do not belong to datasets in the aforementioned pages, it has to be described to the user clearly.
