See ERGO-339. Essentially, to fix the build when using JDK 1.8, I had to add the class files to the org.matheclipse plugin so the build system would not try to build from source. It's unclear why adding the preference for the compiler version did not fix the problem. The solution works and the jar file is small enough that finding the cleaner fix is a low priority issue.
