On a page with many previews, there is a delay before most of the images are loaded. This is because WebKit's image rendering pipeline can block waiting for DOM events even before all the images that have been attached to the DOM have loaded.

I don't know what DOM events can unblock the pipeline; best practices suggest all kinds of workarounds, such as hosting images on a different domain in order to increase the number of browser connections to the webapp.
